Forum: bookmobile Subject: Color...how important is it?

I've looked at the HP 4600 (which is being discontinued by the way) and was impressed. In the long term however, I am wondering how much difference color really makes in these books?

Assuming that the cover is printed in color with a laserjet of some sort, is there really an advantage to having a color printer?

I suppose that it depends on how the book is formatted (another thorny issue), but just want to hear some opinions?

Thanks

Mark

Printing in color for some books such as The Wizard of Oz will make somewhat of a difference. However the cost of consumables is MUCH higher for a color printer than a black & white printer(even to print in just B/W). Unless you are getting a donated printer I think it is much more important to look at the ongoing cost than the original cost.

Do you mean that even if you use a color printer only in BW mode it is still more expensive? If so, can anyone suggest a good high speed duplex network BW printer?

Thanks

Mark

Forum: bookmobile Subject: Cost If I only print black?

I looked at Lexmark, Xerox and HP color and b/w laser duplex printers – both initial and ongoing cost. I feel HP provides the best value/performance. The HP 4100 b/w is rated at 25ppm the print cartridge 10,000 impressions $128.99, HP 4600 Color is rated at 17ppm the print cartridge 9,000 impressions $144.00, HP 5500 is rated 21ppm the print cartridge is 10,000 impressions $209. Assuming 3,600 books per year 200 pages per book the cost difference between the 4100 and the 5500 if printing only black is $1368 if my math is correct.
